LAUSD Eagle Rock Elementary School Access Barrier Removal Project
AE3 Partners has partnered with the Los Angeles Unified School District to address accessibility barriers on a historic campus constructed in the 1920s in Mission Revival style. As a historically significant site, all modifications are subject to rigorous reviews to preserve its architectural integrity. The campus features a primary building elevated approximately 4 feet above grade, accommodating a partial sublevel—typical of educational facilities from this era. This configuration necessitates extensive ramping to achieve ADA compliance. AE3 collaborated closely with District staff and site stakeholders to create an accessibility plan that strategically integrates ramps at key intersections between buildings, enabling shared use and minimizing visual and structural impacts on the historic facade.
The project scope also includes the reconfiguration of nearly a dozen restroom cores to ensure ADA compliance, involving stall adjustments and other enhancements. Additional efforts focus on resolving items identified in the District’s Access Barrier List (ABL), such as upgrading door hardware, modifying handrails, improving signage, reconfiguring auditorium seating and adding a lift, and adjusting drinking fountains to meet accessibility standards.
Key challenges include designing solutions that minimize disruptions to ongoing campus operations and adhering to the District’s budgetary constraints while delivering meaningful improvements. The result is a thoughtful integration of modern accessibility standards within a historically sensitive framework.
